The Garden Series: Artist Conversation with Caroline Sabin
In the first of this series of edited conversations, I’m talking with Cardiff based artist Caroline Sabin, in Thompsons Park, Cardiff.
Discussing the productions we would have been working on together, our coping strategies in response to this time of collective absence, mastering the art of meditative ‘sitting practice’, discovering Feldenkrais, our personal breakthroughs and ideas about the art we are yet to make.

Croesi Traeth
Dance Theatre production Research & Development filmed on Harlech Beach.
Watch Paper State short Film, developed with the support of Dance4Camera3, an initiative run by Welsh Independent Dance at Newport International Film School. The soundtrack features on the B side of a new release ‘Into the Dark’ by composer Sion Orgon.
The movement explored the solitude and ritual of someone waiting to move on and was initially inspired by the remaining residents, squatters and imagined characters of a derelict estate.
The main character moves without sight, on a floor covered with tiny paper squares cut from newspapers. Using tiny scissors, the performer cuts into sheets of newspaper, in an attempt to communicate her feelings.
Interdisciplinary collaboration with Laura Moy at Chapter, Cardiff. Summer 2016. Dream Audience at Chapter, Cardiff, exploring ways of collaborating, in order to generate a playful, supportive, questioning and nurturing environment for growth.
KATHRINE’S PARTY An Inclusive Summer Dance Project funded by Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust, made exclusively with tablet/phone devices, which we created with the dancers over the 6 week summer holidays in 2017. When Catriona first invited me to work with her on this, she said ‘I’ve been thinking about this project exploring failure and I thought of you!’. I couldn’t help but see this as a double edged statement and found myself giggling at my thought processes. Failure is so much about our perception of ourselves. We each have our own expectations and measurements for what constitutes success. I beat myself up every day for feeling like a failure. How did she know?!
